Real or Fake? Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti Teardrop Hoops

Tiffany & Co. is a brand that is known of spectacular quality and craftsmanship. The company has been around since 1837, and has produced countless unique and gorgeous pieces.   Tiffany & Co. jewelry is coveted and sought after by almost everyone that I know. Unfortunately, due to the brand’s popularity and status, Tiffany & Co. has been a target of counterfeits. Like many of you, I personally love and own many Tiffany pieces. I like to be as knowledgeable as possible with every piece that I purchase. Because of this, I have decided to write and publish a series of Tiffany & Co “Real vs. Fake” picture guides with the goal of helping you, my customers and readers, as you contemplate on your next piece of treasure from Tiffany & Co. Thank you so much for browsing our site and please let me know of any questions.

Guide # 1
Tiffany & Co Teardrop Hoops - Know the Designer
Tiffany & Co.’s Teardrop Hoops are from designer Elsa Peretti’s line. With this in mind, you should look for not only the Tiffany & Co logo but also Peretti’s signature on the piece itself.

Take a look at the two pairs of Teardrop hoops on the picture – which one do you think is real?

Answer: The pair on the right is the REAL piece.

It is not very easy to tell at first if you are looking from afar. However, upon closer inspection, you will notice that the real piece has the Elsa Peretti signature very neatly and clearly spelled out.  The quality of an authentic Tiffany piece can be clearly seen.  On the other hand, the fake piece only has the words “Tiffany & Co / 925” and it is not even cleanly etched on the piece.

The hoop on the left is a fake. The right one is real.

A clearer picture of what the real piece looks like. As you can see, the writing on it is very meticulously printed.

Another telltale sign on the fake piece is its shape. Again, it is a bit difficult to tell if you are looking at the earrings on its own. However, once it is placed side by side with the authentic pair of Teardrop hoops, you can easily see that the shape of the real pair if more of an oval round, while the counterfeit one is less oval and a slightly more rounded, as seen in the pictures below.

One last thing, there are also fake pieces that have the Elsa Peretti logo on it. So you would need to watch for the way the piece is marked even more closely. Compare the markings on the REAL piece (the one in front):

Now take a look at the markings on this fake piece (which now has the Elsa Peretti signature):

Note how uneven and unclear the markings are on the hoops below.

With more research, time and experience, you will be able to immediately distinguish between an authentic Tiffany piece from a fake piece. I hope this quick picture guide proved helpful to you.
